Cairo-based architect Laithy Mekawy has envisioned an oasis of tranquillity along the north coast of Alexandria

A Masterfully articulated mix of modern luxe and rustic, elemental charm, this serene house set in Egypt’s idyllic beachfront enclave, Caesar Bay, is home to an investment banker and his wife. They had approached architect Laithy Mekawy to envision a space that was sharp and contemporary, and yet rooted within its local context.

A self-proclaimed laid-back host, entertaining comes naturally to Mekawy and often helps him imagine the perfect flow of spaces and functions within his residential projects. Here, he and his 28-strong Cairo-based team have orchestrated a series of perfectly interwoven experiences that bring an array of styles together without feeling forced or cluttered.

“It’s all about the intricacies within the intricacies”, says Mekawy. “Something as simple as a doorknob, or even a light switch can be a source of great pleasure. No detail is too small.” And it is indeed the beauty in the minute details that makes this villa in Egypt stand apart.

There is always a sensory link that runs through Mekawy’s work; the common thread being a feeling of ease. Here, sharp lines and smooth curves accentuate architectural gestures throughout the two-storey villa, brilliantly honing the rustic charm of exposed wooden ceilings and neo-cement floors. The result is a stylishly cohesive space that is not only easy on the eyes, but is also celebratory of its beautiful beach-side setting.

Shades of eggshell, cream and pale smoke are accentuated by interesting pottery, natural materials including wicker, linen, terrazzo and canvas, with furniture, artwork and bathroom fittings adding a nuanced punch of colour.

Abstract art and Rana Ajam’s exquisite sculptures provides contrast in both colour and geometry in a way they lends thrill and drama without taking away from the overall sense of peace and calm.

Outside, a wonderfully marbled courtyard basks in a timeless Mediterranean vibe courtesy of white rough-stone, aged terracotta pots and lush planting that looks even more dramatic as the sun casts ethereal shadows throughout the day, and leaves the home washed in the amber glow of evening light. laithyarchitects.com
